How to Sublimate MDF & Wood Blanks: Ornaments, Clocks & Keychains
MDF is one of the most forgiving sublimation surfaces there is — flat, rigid, cheap to practice on, and gorgeous when it goes right. It's also the material with the widest honest temperature spread in published guidance, which is why so many crafters scorch their first ornament. This guide gives you the real settings range, the reason it's a range, and the technique that keeps whites white. Quick answer: coated MDF blanks sublimate between 350°F and 400°F (177–204°C) for 45–90 seconds, mostly at light-to-medium pressure. That spread is real — different manufacturers publish different numbers for different coatings — so start low (350–360°F / 60 seconds), test one blank, and climb only if colours are weak. Peel the transfer promptly after pressing. And to be clear: only coated MDF works — regular or finished wood is not a sublimation blank.

The 350–400°F spread isn't sloppy sourcing — it's what reputable manufacturers actually publish, because MDF coatings differ. The cost of guessing wrong is asymmetric: too cool gives you a faint transfer you can diagnose and re-test; too hot gives you a yellowed, scorched blank you throw away. So always enter the range from the bottom. Settings printed on your blank's packaging or product page override any generic chart, including this one.
What You Need
- Coated MDF sublimation blanks — round ornaments (3 sizes), record clocks, ghost magnets, MDF keychains, hall passes, countdown boards, photo frame ornaments, and cork-backed coasters — all in our MDF line. The white coated face is the printable surface.
- Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
- Flat heat press
- Heat-resistant tape, protective/butcher paper, heat gloves
Not sublimation blanks: our laser-cut and finished-wood décor items are craft wood, not coated sublimation surfaces — sublimation ink won't bond to them. If a wood product isn't listed as sublimation-ready, it isn't.
Step by Step: Sublimating MDF
- Print your design mirrored, sized slightly larger than the blank so the image bleeds past the edges — this avoids white halos on ornament rims.
- Wipe the coated face free of dust with a dry lint-free cloth and handle by the edges (fingerprints can show in the transfer).
- Stack face-down: protective paper on the lower platen, then the printed transfer ink-side up, then the blank coated-side down onto the ink. Tape the blank to the paper so nothing shifts. Protective paper on top.
- Press at 350–360°F (177–182°C) for 60 seconds, light-to-medium pressure for your first test (or your blank manufacturer's published setting). For cork-backed coasters, keep the cork side up, away from the platen.
- Peel promptly. Lift the press, carefully peel the transfer off while the blank is hot — for Unisub-style coated MDF, manufacturers say peel ASAP. Wear gloves; MDF holds heat.
- Evaluate and adjust. Faint colours → add 10–15°F or 10–15 seconds and re-test. Yellowed edges or browned whites → you're too hot; drop back. Record your winning numbers for that exact blank.
Troubleshooting MDF
Blank yellowed or browned (especially whites and edges): classic over-temp scorching — MDF coating discolours before you'd ever "burn" the board. Drop to the lower end of the range (350–360°F) and shorten the press. Scorching is permanent; there is no fix, only prevention. Colours faint or pastel: under-pressed. Add temperature or time in small steps, and confirm the press has recovered to full temperature between blanks. Ghosting (blurry double image): the transfer shifted, or sat on the hot blank after pressing. Tape securely and peel promptly in one smooth motion. White edge/halo around the design: the print was cut or sized exactly to the blank. Print with bleed — bigger than the blank — and centre the blank on the ink. Ink didn't take at all: either the wrong face (backing side instead of the white coated face) or a non-sublimation wood product. Only the coated surface accepts ink.
FAQ
Can you sublimate on regular wood? Not directly — sublimation ink needs a polymer coating to bond into, and raw or finished wood doesn't have one. Only MDF and wood blanks sold as sublimation-coated will take the ink properly. Our laser-cut and finished-wood décor items are craft wood, not sublimation blanks. (Crafters do DIY-coat raw wood with sublimation sprays or laminate — that's a separate advanced technique with its own products and instructions.)

Are your cork-backed coasters pressed differently? Same principle, one caution: coated face down onto the ink, cork side up away from the platen. The published setting for coated MDF coasters is 400°F (204°C) for 45–60 seconds (the source doesn't specify pressure — start light-to-medium as with other MDF) — but as with all MDF, test your first one and watch for discolouration.
