Slate's other non-negotiable is cooling: it must air-cool on its own, because quenching hot slate in water cracks it. The two slate methods are a trade-off, not a contradiction: silicone pads insulate more, so they run cooler and much longer; a sponge/Nomex pad transfers heat faster, so it runs hotter and shorter. Pick one method and follow it end to end. As always, published figures are starting points — press one test blank and record what works for your press, paper and ink. (The sequin figures come from a single published source, so treat them as a starting point especially.)
Why Slate Takes So Long
Stone is dense and heats slowly. A t-shirt reaches transfer temperature in seconds; a slab of slate needs minutes just to get its coated surface up to temperature through all that mass — cutting the press short is why slates come out pale and washed-out. Set a timer, walk away, and let the full cycle run. The same mass is why cooling matters: slate holds heat for a long time after pressing, and shocking it with water or a cold surface is how it cracks.

- Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
- Flat heat press; silicone pads OR a sponge/Nomex pad for slate (your pad choice sets your slate method)
- Blowout paper (plain white protective paper — several sheets for slate), heat-resistant tape, heat gloves, a heat-safe cooling surface
Step by Step: Photo Slate
- Print your design mirrored, sized to the slate's coated face (the white-coated surface is the printable area — the ragged stone edge frames it).
- Choose your method by your pad: silicone pads → 370–375°F (188–191°C), 10.5–13 minutes. Sponge/Nomex pad → 385–390°F (196–199°C), 6–9.5 minutes. Thicker/larger slates sit at the long end of each window.
- Stack the press bottom-up: pad, then blowout paper, then the transfer print-side UP, then the slate coated-face DOWN onto the transfer, then more blowout paper on top. The slate presses face-down into the print.
- Press at medium pressure for the full time. Do not open early to peek — every peek drops the temperature and stretches an already long cycle.
- Lift the slate off with heat gloves (it is genuinely hot and stays hot), peel the paper, and set it on a heat-safe surface.
- Air-cool only. Never quench slate in water, never set it on a cold countertop, never park it by an open window in a Canadian winter. Sudden temperature change cracks stone — let it come down on its own, even though that takes a while.
Step by Step: Sequin, Hardboard & Silicone
Sequin pillows: brush all sequins flat in the same direction, put a pressing pillow inside the cover and a non-stick sheet on top, and press at 380–400°F (193–204°C) for 45–55 seconds at 40 psi. Hardboard: transfer face-down against the coated face, press at 380–400°F (193–204°C) for 60 seconds (Joto publishes 400°F/60 sec for its hardboard), and peel the transfer immediately — hardboard ghosts if the paper cools in place. Silicone keychains: we won't publish numbers we haven't verified — there are no reliable general settings for silicone blanks in circulation. Follow the instructions supplied with the blank, and if it shipped without any, contact us or the manufacturer before pressing. Test one piece regardless.
Troubleshooting Slate & Specialty Blanks
Slate design is pale or washed out: the press was cut short. Slate needs the full 6–13 minute cycle for its method — re-check your pad type against your time and run the whole window. Slate cracked: thermal shock — it was cooled too fast (water, cold surface, cold draft). Air-cool only, always. Brown or yellowed slate coating: over-temperature for your method, or a sponge-pad time used with silicone-pad heat. Match the temperature and time to one method. Ink stains on the press or pad: blowout — ink travelled past the paper. Use fresh blowout sheets above and below every press. Hardboard image is ghosted: the paper cooled on the blank. Peel immediately, while hot. Sequins melted or dulled: too hot, too long, or no non-stick sheet — stay inside 380–400°F (193–204°C) / 45–55 seconds with the sheet in place.

After pressing, the sequins still flip to reveal the design — that's the point of the blank.
Can I sublimate silicone? Only if the blank is made for it, and only using that manufacturer's instructions — there are no reliable general published settings for silicone, and we won't invent them. Our silicone keychain blanks should be pressed per the instructions supplied with them, with a test piece first.
What temperature do I press hardboard at? 380–400°F (193–204°C) for 60 seconds — Joto publishes 400°F/60 seconds for its hardboard, USCutter publishes 380–400°F/60 seconds at 40 psi for Unisub hardboard. Peel the transfer immediately after pressing to avoid ghosting.
