How to Sublimate Acrylic Blanks: Keychains, Ornaments & Frames
Acrylic is the material that breaks everyone's sublimation habits — you don't mirror your design, you press the back of the blank, and if you skip one small step at the end, your finished keychain curls like a potato chip. This guide covers the settings and the acrylic-specific technique for keychains, ornaments, magnets, photo frames, LED frames and night lights. Quick answer: most acrylic keychains and small blanks sublimate between 350°F and 400°F (177–204°C) for 60 seconds — published sources genuinely disagree inside that range, so test your first blank at the lower end. Larger acrylic photo panels run hotter and much longer (around 400°F / 204°C for roughly 230 seconds). Press the frosted/back side with your design not mirrored, print-side up, and weight the blank flat while it cools.

Those keychain numbers aren't a typo — reputable published sources land at 370°F and at 400°F for essentially the same blanks, and pressure recommendations split between medium and high. That spread is real, and it comes down to press calibration, blank thickness and coating. Start at the low end (370°F / 60 sec / medium), press one test blank, and only climb if colours come out weak. Over-temping acrylic is how you get warping — under-temping is fixable, melting isn't. If your blank's manufacturer publishes settings, those beat any generic chart, including this one.
What You Need
- Sublimatable acrylic blanks — keychain blanks (1.5" × 1.2"), swivel ornaments, magnets, photo frames with stand, LED frames, ornaments and keychains, and night lights. Only acrylic sold as sublimation-ready has the coating that accepts the ink.
- Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
- Flat heat press
- Heat-resistant tape, protective/butcher paper, heat gloves
- A flat, heat-safe weight (a smooth heavy book wrapped in butcher paper works) for the cooling step
Step by Step: Sublimating Acrylic
- Print your design NOT mirrored. This is the step that catches everyone. Because you press through the back of the blank and view the design through the front, a mirrored print comes out backwards. Normal orientation, exactly as you want it to read.
- Peel the protective film off BOTH sides of the acrylic blank. Film left on either side ruins the transfer and can melt onto your press.
- Identify the sublimation side — it's the frosted (matte) back side, not the glossy front. That frosted surface is the coating.
- Stack it print-side up: transfer paper on your press with the printed design facing up, then lay the blank frosted-side down onto the print. You're pressing the back of the blank against the ink.
- Press at 370°F (188°C) for 60 seconds, medium pressure (or your blank manufacturer's published setting), with protective paper above and below the stack.
- Weight it flat while it cools. Acrylic comes off the press soft and it curls as it cools — set the hot blank on a flat surface and put a flat weight on top until it's cool to the touch. This one step is the difference between a flat keychain and a warped one.
Double-sided acrylic (LED ornaments, two-sided keychains): we haven't verified independent settings for the second press, and manufacturer language on it varies. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific double-sided blank for side two, and test on one unit before running a batch.
Troubleshooting Acrylic
Design reads backwards: you mirrored the print. Acrylic is the exception to the mirror rule — reprint in normal orientation and press the frosted back side. Blank warped or curled: it cooled unweighted, or it was over-temped. Weight every blank flat as it cools, and if warping persists, drop your temperature toward the 350–370°F end. Cloudy patches or texture melted into the surface: protective film was left on one side, or temperature/pressure was too high for your blank. Peel both films, drop to the low end of the range. Colours weak or washed out: under-pressed for your particular press — add temperature in small steps (toward 400°F) or confirm your press has recovered to full temperature between blanks. Ink only partially transferred: you pressed the glossy front instead of the frosted back, or the stack shifted. Frosted side takes the ink; tape the blank to the print so nothing moves.
FAQ
Do I mirror my design for acrylic? No — acrylic is the big exception. You press the frosted back of the blank and view the design through the clear front, so the print goes down in normal (not mirrored) orientation, print-side up, with the blank on top. Mirror it and it reads backwards.
Which side of an acrylic blank do I sublimate? The frosted (matte) back side — that's where the sublimation coating is. The glossy side is the front you'll look through. Remove the protective film from both sides before pressing.
Why did my acrylic warp? Acrylic softens under press heat and curls as it cools if left free. Weight each blank flat with a heat-safe flat object until fully cool. If it still warps, your temperature is too high for that blank — retest at the lower end of the 350–400°F range.
