How to Sublimate Mugs: Time, Temperature & Settings Guide

The 11 oz white mug is the product most Canadian crafters sublimate first — and the one where a wrong setting shows up most obviously, because black text turns brown or gray the moment your time or temperature is off. This guide gives you the mug press settings the major press and blank manufacturers actually publish, explains why you'll see two very different time ranges out there, and covers the rest of our ceramic line too. Quick answer: in a mug press, coated ceramic mugs sublimate at 400°F (204°C) for roughly 150–300 seconds (2.5–5 minutes) at medium to high pressure, depending on your press. Some presses run as low as 350°F (176°C) within that time range, and one popular guide quotes only 60–80 seconds — that's a press-type difference, not a contradiction (more below). Test one mug first, always.

Why does one source say 60–80 seconds when everyone else says 3–5 minutes? Mug presses vary a lot in how they deliver heat — a fast, tight-wrapping press transfers in a fraction of the time of a slower element. Neither camp is "wrong"; they're describing different equipment. Use the 150–300 second range as your primary starting point for a standard mug press, and if your first test comes out overcooked, work downward. Whatever your press, record what works for your press, paper and ink, and keep using it.

The black-ink diagnostic (Sawgrass): press a test design with solid black. If the black comes out brown, you overcooked it — reduce time or temperature. If it comes out gray, you undercooked it — add time. This one test dials in almost any mug press.

Convection oven and mug wraps: we don't publish oven numbers for mugs because the settings depend entirely on your specific wrap and oven — follow your wrap and oven manufacturer's instructions. And if you do use a convection oven for sublimation, dedicate it to crafting permanently: never use a sublimation oven for food again.

What You Need

  • A coated sublimation mug blank — a regular dollar-store mug will NOT work; the polymer coating is what accepts the ink. Shop 11 oz and 15 oz white mugs (11 oz available by the case of 36 for wholesale pricing), plus two-tone coloured-handle mugs and pearl-finish mugs.
  • Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
  • Mug press (or convection oven + mug wraps — follow the wrap manufacturer's settings)
  • Heat-resistant tape, heat gloves, protective/butcher paper

Step by Step: Mug Press Method

  1. Print your design mirrored, sized to your mug's template — check the product page for the exact print area of the blank you bought.
  2. Wrap the print face-down against the mug, centred between the handle edges, and pull it tight — any air gap becomes a faded patch. Tape the seam and both top and bottom edges with heat-resistant tape.
  3. Preheat your press fully, then load the mug and press at 400°F (204°C). Set your timer in the 150–300 second range (start around 200 seconds and adjust) — and if your press loses temperature when you load the mug, wait until it's back at temp before starting the clock.
  4. Remove the mug with gloves, and wait briefly before peeling the paper — the mug-press guidance (Sawgrass) is to wait before peeling, because disturbing the transfer too soon invites ghosting.
  5. Let the mug air-cool on a heat-safe surface. Don't quench it in water — thermal shock can crack ceramic.

Other Ceramic Blanks: Tiles, Flower Pots & Gold-Rim Plates

The settings above are for mugs in a mug press. Our ceramic line also includes tiles, flower pots and gold-rim plates — these are pressed differently (flat press for tiles; shaped items vary), and published settings for them are blank-specific, so follow the manufacturer's instructions supplied with each blank and run a test piece first. Two notes from experience: two-tone and coloured-handle mugs press with the same mug settings as white mugs (the sublimated area is the white coated body — remember sublimation ink is transparent, so it only shows true on white), and metallic accents like a gold rim should be kept clear of tape and direct element contact.

Troubleshooting Mugs

Black text looks brown: overcooked — reduce time first, then temperature if needed. (This is the classic Sawgrass diagnostic.) Black text looks gray / colours washed out: undercooked — add time, or your press hadn't recovered temperature before you started the timer. Ghosting (blurry double image): the paper moved, or was disturbed too soon after pressing. Tape tighter, and wait briefly before peeling (the published mug guidance is to wait before peeling). Faded patch or line: an air gap between paper and mug. Pull the wrap tighter and re-tape; check the mug's surface for dust before wrapping. Design faded after use: almost always dishwasher damage rather than a pressing fault — see the FAQ below.

Test each size separately and note what works, since the larger mug may land at a different point in the time range on your press.

Can I use a regular kitchen oven to sublimate mugs? You can sublimate mugs in a convection oven using mug wraps, but we don't publish settings for it — times and temperatures depend entirely on your specific wrap and oven, so follow the wrap manufacturer's instructions. Critically: once an oven has been used for sublimation, it's a craft oven forever — never use it for food again.

Why did my mug fade? If it faded straight out of the press (gray, washed-out blacks), it was undercooked — add pressing time. If it faded after weeks of use, it's almost certainly dishwasher wear: heat and detergent degrade the coating the design lives in. Hand-wash sublimated mugs and the design lasts for years.

Will sublimation work on a coloured mug? Sublimation ink is transparent, so it only displays true colours on a white surface. Our two-tone mugs work because the body is white and coated — the colour is on the handle and interior only. A fully coloured or uncoated mug won't give you a usable result.
