Quick answer: most coated aluminum blanks sublimate at 375–400°F (190–204°C) for 35–80 seconds at medium pressure. Photo-grade panels (ChromaLuxe-style) run longer: ~400°F (204°C) for 90–120 seconds on small panels, up to 200 seconds on a 24×36". That 35-second-to-200-second spread is real and it isn't a contradiction — different aluminum coatings transfer at different rates, and photo panels are engineered for a longer, deeper dwell than thin ornament stock. Start from your blank's product-page spec table if it has one; otherwise start at 400°F / 60 seconds / medium and adjust from your first test piece. Record what works for your press, paper and ink.
License plates: none of our sources publish a license-plate-specific setting, so we won't invent one. Treat a plate as a standard coated panel — start in the general range above — and check the spec supplied by your blank's vendor before committing a batch. What You Need
- A coated sublimation aluminum blank — raw hardware-store aluminum will NOT work; the polymer coating is what accepts the ink. Shop 8×12" and 8×10" sign blanks, license plates, wind spinners, ornaments, puck inserts and disc jewellery.
- Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
- Flat heat press
- Heat-resistant tape, heat gloves, protective paper, and — for larger panels — a sheet of polyester poplin
Step by Step: Pressing an Aluminum Panel
- Peel the protective film if your blank ships with one on the coated face, and handle the panel by its edges from then on.
- Print your design mirrored and place the print side directly against the coated face of the panel — transfer face-down, panel face-up under it is the standard setup; one supplier's method inverts this (panel on top, transfer side down, absorbent sheet beneath) — both work, pick one and be consistent.
- Tape the transfer to the panel with heat-resistant tape on two edges so it cannot shift — metal is slick and untaped paper slides.
- Protect both sides: protective paper below the panel (ink blows through paper onto your lower platen otherwise), and on panels 11×17" and larger, lay polyester poplin over the top for even pressure across the sheet.
- Press at your blank's setting — general aluminum 375–400°F (190–204°C), 35–80 seconds, medium; photo panels ~400°F (204°C), 90–120+ seconds, medium-high.
- Remove with gloves, peel the transfer promptly, and set the panel to cool face-up on a heat-safe surface. Face-down cooling can mar the hot coating.
Product-Specific Notes (87 blanks, one family)
- 8×12" / 8×10" sign blanks: the general table applies directly; these are the easiest metal blanks to learn on.
- License plates: general panel settings + vendor spec check, as above; keep the embossed-look edge (if any) clear of tape.
- Wind spinners & chimes: thin double-sided stock — press one side, cool fully face-up, then the second side; keep sessions short at the low end of the time range to avoid overcooking side one while pressing side two. Test one spinner before a batch.
- Hockey puck inserts, ornaments & disc jewellery: small pieces heat fast — start at the short end of your range; tape placement matters more because tape shadows show on small faces (keep tape on the back or extreme edge).
- Photo panels: use the Condé ChromaLuxe row — the longer dwell is what produces the deep photographic finish.
Troubleshooting Aluminum
Colours look dull or flat: usually undercooked — add time — or the transfer was pressed against the uncoated back of the panel. Also check that the protective film was removed before pressing. Colours look brownish or scorched: overcooked — reduce time first, then temperature. Small/thin blanks overcook fastest. Ghosting (blurry double image): the transfer shifted on the slick metal. Tape it, lift the platen straight up, peel promptly. Uneven transfer across a large panel: pressure isn't even edge to edge — add the poplin layer on ≥11×17" panels and check your press for platen warp. Ink stains on your press: blow-through — always run protective paper below the panel, and replace it every press.

Can I sublimate a license plate? Yes — sublimation license plate blanks are coated aluminum and press like a standard panel. Which side of the aluminum do I print on? The coated face — on most blanks it's the whiter, smoother side, and it usually ships covered by a protective film you peel off first. Place your transfer's printed side directly against that coated face. The uncoated back will not accept ink.
Do I need to mirror designs for aluminum? Yes — the transfer is pressed face-down against the panel, so the image flips. Print mirrored, and remember any text on wind spinners' second side needs its own mirrored print.
