How to Sublimate Neoprene & Foam: Mousepads, Can Coolers & More
Neoprene is beginner-friendly on settings and unforgiving on handling — the temperatures are ordinary, but foam remembers every piece of tape, every edge, and every uneven press as a permanent mark on the surface. This guide covers the settings and the foam-specific handling rules for mousepads, skinny and regular can coozies, hard-sided can coolers, car coasters, wristlets, and sanitizer, chapstick and freezie holders — the 11 neoprene and foam blanks we stock for Canadian crafters in our Langley, BC warehouse.
Quick answer: most neoprene and foam blanks sublimate around 375–400°F (190–204°C) for 35–60 seconds — with mousepads at 375–400°F for 40–45 seconds and koozies around 385°F for 50 seconds. Pressure recommendations genuinely conflict between sources (light-medium vs high — see the note below the table for why). Use full-sheet transfers with no tape on the printable face, parchment above and below, and press seamed can coolers one side at a time.

About that pressure conflict: one manufacturer publishes light-medium pressure, another publishes high, for the same class of blank — and both are being honest. Foam compresses, so "pressure" on a foam blank doesn't mean what it means on a mug: a press reading "high" over a squishy mousepad may deliver similar actual contact to "medium" over a rigid board, and every press's gauge (or knob) reads differently. Treat pressure as the variable you tune on your own equipment: start medium, check for full even ink contact and no crushed texture, and adjust. Temperature agreement is strong (385°F is the crowd favourite); pressure is yours to dial in. As always, your blank manufacturer's supplied instructions win.
What You Need
- Neoprene/foam sublimation blanks — mousepads, skinny and regular foam coozies, hard-sided can coolers, car coasters, wristlets, and sanitizer, chapstick and freezie holders — all in our neoprene line. The white polyester-topped face is the printable surface.
- Sublimation printer with sublimation ink, and sublimation paper
- Flat heat press
- Parchment paper (two sheets — above AND below the stack), heat gloves
- Heat-resistant tape — for the edges/back only, never the printable face
Step by Step: Sublimating Neoprene & Foam
- Print your design mirrored on a full sheet, sized to bleed past the blank's edges. On foam, a transfer smaller than the blank leaves a pressed rectangle outline — the full-sheet bleed is what keeps edges clean.
- Build the stack: parchment on the lower platen, then the blank face-up, then the transfer ink-side down covering the entire blank, then parchment on top. Parchment both sides protects the platen and the foam from stray ink blow-through.
- Do not tape anything on the printable face. Foam permanently records tape lines. If you must secure the transfer, tape it to itself around the back of the blank, or rely on the parchment sandwich and careful handling.
- Press at 385°F (196°C) for 40–50 seconds, medium pressure as your first test (mousepads 40–45 sec; koozies ~50 sec), or your blank manufacturer's setting.
- Seamed can coolers: one side at a time. Lay the cooler flat with the seam at the fold, press side one, let it cool enough to handle, then reposition and press side two — keeping the already-pressed side and the seam off direct platen contact. Never crush a seamed cooler flat under one long press.
- Peel promptly and lift straight up — dragging the paper across warm foam can smear. Check for full colour and even texture, and record your numbers.
Troubleshooting Neoprene & Foam
Lines, rectangles or marks pressed into the surface: tape on the face, a transfer smaller than the blank, or an edge of parchment landing mid-blank. Full-sheet transfers, tape only on the back, parchment sheets larger than the whole stack. Crushed or flattened texture: pressure too high for your press's actual delivery on compressible foam. Back the pressure off and re-test — foam makes gauge readings misleading, so trust the result, not the dial. Colours weak or patchy: under-pressed — add time within the published window, or check that your transfer had full even contact (foam surfaces can dip in the middle; medium pressure with a proper stack usually fixes it). Seam line or half-faded design on a can cooler: the cooler was pressed flat in one go, or the two side-presses overlapped badly. One side at a time, seam at the fold, modest overlap. Ink blow-through marks on the platen or blank back: missing parchment. Two sheets, every press, above and below.

Pressing a seamed cooler flat in one go crushes the seam and leaves a fade line.
Do I use light or heavy pressure on foam? Published guidance genuinely splits — one manufacturer says light-medium, another says high — because foam compresses and every press's pressure reading means something different over a squishy blank. Start at medium, check for full even ink contact without crushed texture, and tune from there on your own press. There's no single right answer to copy; there's the answer you test.
Can I sublimate both sides of a coozie? Press each side as its own separate press (see the seam question above) with parchment between the layers so the finished side can't ghost or pick up blow-through. Follow your specific blank's instructions for whether both faces are coated.
