About WestCoastCraft

PU leather sublimation blanks are one of the most versatile and profitable product categories in the sublimation world. The faux leather surface gives finished products a premium, boutique look that customers are willing to pay more for — from custom keychains and luggage tags to earrings, bookmarks, and patches. This guide covers everything you need to know about sublimating on PU leather blanks, including the correct temperature and time settings, step-by-step instructions, and tips for getting the best results.

What Is PU Leather Sublimation?

PU leather (polyurethane leather) is a synthetic faux leather material. When manufactured with a sublimation-compatible coating, PU leather blanks can accept sublimation ink just like any other polyester-coated substrate. The sublimation ink bonds into the polyurethane surface under heat, producing vivid, full-colour prints with the look and feel of custom-printed leather.

PU leather sublimation blanks are available in a wide range of product types. Browse our full PU leather sublimation collection to see the full range, including PU leather keychains, patches, earrings, luggage tags, bookmarks, and more.

PU Leather Sublimation Temperature and Time Settings

PU leather requires lower temperature and shorter press times than aluminum or ceramic blanks. This is important — pressing too hot or too long will damage the PU leather surface, causing warping, bubbling, or discolouration.

Recommended settings:

  • Temperature: 310°F to 330°F (154°C to 166°C)
  • Time: 45 to 60 seconds
  • Pressure: Light to medium

These settings are significantly lower than the 375–400°F used for aluminum and ceramic blanks. PU leather is a softer material that is more sensitive to heat, so staying in the 310–330°F range is critical. Always start at the lower end (310°F for 45 seconds) and increase gradually if the colours appear faded.

Step-by-Step: How to Sublimate on PU Leather

Step 1: Print your design. Print your image mirror-flipped on sublimation paper using sublimation ink. For small items like keychains and earrings, you can fit multiple designs on a single sheet. Use high-quality print settings for the best colour output.

Step 2: Prepare the blank. Wipe the PU leather surface with a clean, dry lint-free cloth to remove any dust. Unlike aluminum blanks, PU leather should not be wiped with rubbing alcohol as it may damage the surface coating. Handle the blank by the edges to avoid leaving fingerprints on the print area.

Step 3: Position and tape. Place the sublimation paper face-down on the PU leather blank and secure with heat-resistant tape. For small items like keychains, tape on two sides. For larger items like patches, tape all four edges. The paper must not shift during pressing.

Step 4: Pre-heat the press. Set your heat press to 310–330°F and allow it to fully reach temperature. Place a Teflon sheet or butcher paper on the bottom platen to protect it.

Step 5: Press. Place the taped blank and paper on the press. Close with light to medium pressure — PU leather is softer than metal or ceramic, so heavy pressure can leave imprint marks from the edges of the blank. Press for 45–60 seconds.

Step 6: Peel and cool. Open the press, remove the blank with care (it will be warm but not as hot as metal blanks), and peel the sublimation paper. PU leather cools quickly, so peel promptly for the cleanest results. Allow to cool completely before handling.

Common PU Leather Sublimation Problems

Warping or curling: Temperature too high or press time too long. PU leather is heat-sensitive — reduce temperature by 10°F and shorten press time. If the blank is curling at the edges, your pressure may also be too heavy.

Bubbling or surface damage: This is almost always caused by excessive heat. Drop your temperature to 310°F and test again. Some PU leather blanks from different manufacturers may have different heat tolerances, so always test a sample first.

Faded or light colours: Temperature too low or press time too short. Increase gradually in 5°F increments. Also check that you are printing on the correct (coated) side of the sublimation paper and that your printer has the correct ICC colour profile installed.

Colour bleed or ghosting: Paper shifted during pressing. Use more tape and be careful when closing the press. On small items like keychains, even a tiny shift is visible.

Best PU Leather Products for Beginners

If you are new to PU leather sublimation, start with PU leather keychains. They are small, affordable, and quick to press — perfect for dialling in your temperature and time settings without wasting material. Keychains are also one of the best-selling sublimation products at craft shows and on Etsy because of their low price point and high perceived value.

Once you are comfortable with your settings, expand to larger PU leather items like luggage tags, earrings, bookmarks, and patches. These products all press at the same temperature range and are excellent for building a diverse product line.

Why PU Leather Sublimation Products Sell Well

PU leather sublimation products have a premium look and feel that commands higher prices than standard acrylic or MDF alternatives. Customers associate leather with quality, and the soft, flexible texture of PU leather blanks makes the finished product feel more luxurious than a rigid keychain or ornament. PU leather products are also lightweight, durable, and water-resistant, making them practical for everyday use.

For crafting business owners, PU leather blanks offer excellent margins. The blanks are affordable, the per-item ink cost is minimal, and the finished products can be priced at a premium due to the perceived quality of the leather material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature do you sublimate on PU leather?

PU leather sublimation blanks press best at 310°F to 330°F (154°C to 166°C) with light to medium pressure for 45 to 60 seconds. This is lower than most other sublimation blanks because PU leather is more heat-sensitive and can warp or bubble at higher temperatures.

Can you sublimate on real leather?

No. Sublimation ink bonds with polyester-based coatings, and real leather does not have the required polyester surface. PU leather (polyurethane synthetic leather) with a sublimation coating is the correct material for sublimation printing on leather-look products.

Why is my PU leather sublimation warping?

Warping is caused by too much heat or too much pressure. Reduce your temperature to 310°F and use light pressure. PU leather is softer than aluminum or ceramic blanks and requires gentler press settings. If warping persists, shorten your press time to 40–45 seconds.

Are PU leather sublimation products waterproof?

PU leather is water-resistant, making sublimated PU leather products suitable for everyday use including keychains, luggage tags, and outdoor accessories. The sublimation print is bonded into the surface and will not wash off or fade from water exposure.
